Eco-artist Holly from Auckland creates with non-toxic earth pigments, exploring nature's role in shaping cultural meanings. An award-winning graphic and textile designer, she also teaches natural pigment workshops.
Grounded in the lush landscapes of Auckland and a farm near Matakana, Aotearoa, Holly Clarke's rural upbringing has shaped her artistic vision. Inspired by the natural beauty of her childhood, she spent over three decades refining her design skills, including eight years in Florence, Italy. There, she immersed herself in Italian culture, broadening her creative horizons. Upon returning to New Zealand, Holly established herself as a self-taught graphic and textile designer, collaborating with brands like Citta Design.
A deep connection to the earth, fostered during her childhood, became central to Holly's work. This connection embodies a balance of peace, passion, shadow, and light. Using non-toxic, hand-made earth pigments, she creates art that absorbs light and reflects her belief in healthy practices for both herself and the environment.
Holly explores themes of spaciousness, duality, and the energy found in nature. By leaving areas of the canvas unpainted and embracing the Japanese concept of yutori—making space—she invites viewers to pause and interpret the work, offering a refuge from the intensity of life. Her art highlights nature’s role in shaping social and cultural meanings, focusing on timeless, earthy elements while resisting the fleeting consumerism of modern society. Through subtle gestures, Holly aims to foster a sensory connection and offer a space for self-expression and reflection.
